There were 4,384 fatal workplace accidents in the US over 2012, newly-released data from the Bureau of Labour Statistics has revealed.
Slips, trips and falls were responsible for 668 of these accidents, with 544 of these incidents described as falls to a lower level. The distance of the fall was recorded in 437 fatal incidents, and of these, around 25% involved falls of under 10 feet, with falls over 30 feet representing around the same proportion.
The majority of fatal incidents in the US’ workplaces were transportation incidents, representing more than 40% of all workplace deaths, or 1,789 fatal injuries. Violence and other injuries caused by people or animals were responsible for the death of 767 people, while 225 people took their own life in the workplace.
In comparison, there were 148 fatal injuries in the UK from 2012 to 2013, provisional figures from the Health and Safety Executive reveal. Falls from height pose the biggest danger to the lives of British workers, with the average year seeing between 40 and 50 people dying in workplace falls.
