Selfridges is a high-end department store that sees hundreds of visitors every day, and with these high levels of footfall, Selfridges accident claims occasionally occur. The company is legally required to take all reasonably practicable steps to prevent accidents from occurring in any of its stores, and when it is negligent towards this duty and this negligence leads to an accident, the company can be liable in personal injury claims. Selfridges is also responsible for its managers and employees and is liable for injuries caused by their negligence. While slips and trips in Selfridges represent the majority of compensation claims against the company, manual handling injuries, injuries caused by falling objects and a range of other factors can also lead to employees or customers suffering injuries.
A 73-year-old grandmother was shopping in Selfridges’ flagship store in London’s Oxford Street. She took her children into the Santa’s Grotto – which was run by Melbry Events – and were posing for a photograph when the accident happened. One of Santa’s elves asked the grandmother to step backwards, and as she did, she tripped over a bauble, breaking her leg. She required major surgery to repair the injury, which included adding screws and plates into her leg.
It was determined that Santa and the elf should have ensured that slip and trip hazards did not exist in the grotto and that Melbry Events was responsible for the injury. While the overall value of the Selfridges accident compensation claim was not divulged, it is thought to be around £30,000.
