West Yorkshire firefighter workplace accident rate falls to 15-year low
15th January 2014
The number of accidents at work firefighters in West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have been involved in has fallen to a 15-year low, a report has revealed.
The data, published in the Yorkshire Post, showed there were 173 workplace accidents involving the fire service between April 2012 and March 2013, which represents a 24% decline on the previous year’s figures.
Some of the main personal injuries sustained by firefighters over this timeframe included slips and trips, exposure to dangerous substances and musculoskeletal disorders.
Although there has been a decline in the number of incidents attended and the size of the organisation’s workforce, the news source reports that fire service bosses cannot fully explain the reduction.
The report said the low number of workplace accidents was “extremely encouraging” and links to the Service Supports’ health and safety ambitions.
