West Herts Hospitals Nhs Trust Pays Out £230k In Workplace Accident Claims

Accident at work compensation claims against West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust totalled £230,000 in the months since January 2008, a Freedom of Information request by the Watford Observer has revealed.
The largest personal injury claim occurred in May 2010, when an employee suffered a slip and tip injury over a patch of ice and sustained serious injuries. They received £44,875 in their compensation claim.
Other sizable slip and trip claims included a £11,788 claim, which was paid to a worker who injured their shoulder and knee tripping over a cable, while a £9,143 claim was made by a worker who slipped over an unidentified substance, later suffering an infection in surgery.
Furthermore, medical negligence claims and other cases involving patients, including on-going payments and settlement fees, totalled £33,178,929 over this timeframe.
The NHS Trust covers Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Watford, and has more than 4,000 employees across its three sites.
Director of Workforce for the NHS Trust Mark Vaughan said that the Trust takes its health and safety obligations towards its employees “very seriously”. It aims to do all it can to prevent slips, trips and falls or other accidents at work, he added.
Every incidents that is reported is fully investigated so the NHS Trust can learn from them, Mr Vaughan said.
