'Special Measures' For 11 NHS Trusts

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has revealed that 11 NHS trusts have been put under “special measures” after a catalogue of healthcare failures were found in them.

Patients in the trusts were left on hospital trolleys for prolonged periods of time, while staff had low clinical cover levels and were occasionally asked to work for 12 consecutive days.

These trusts will be assessed and any senior members of staff found lacking will be removed from their posts. Each trust will be appointed with a successful organisation as part of a mentorship programme.

This move follows the Keogh Mortality Review into 14 hospital trusts that had higher mortality rates than the national average. Mr Hunt told the Commons that statistics suggest that since 2005, thousands of people who would not have otherwise died passed away at these 14 trusts.

In half of these trusts, he pointed out the Care Quality Commission “worryingly” did not have any particular concerns about healthcare and patient safety, instead finding them “compliant with basic standards”.

The following hospital trusts have been put in special measures:

–          North Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Trust

–          North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust

–          Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

–          Medway NHS Foundation Trust

–          Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

–          Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

–          George Elliot Hospital NHS Trust

–          East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust

–          Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

–          United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust

–          Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
