Sheffield Health Trusts 'See 13 Serious Incidents' In June And July
10th September 2013
Sheffield’s health trusts have made a number of avoidable accidents this year, leaving them exposed to medical negligence claim.
A document released by the NHS Sheffield Commissioning Group and published in The Star found 13 serious incidents in the city’s health trust facilities over June and July. While some of these appear to be due to medical negligence, including a case that saw a swab left in a person’s body, two failures to act on test results, critical equipment failures and major surgical errors, other injuries could have happened anywhere.
There were several serious slips, trips and falls over the two months, as well as an attempted suicide.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Medical Director Dr David Throssell told the news source that of seven reported incidents, six did not lead to lasting injuries, adding that over one million people are treated in Sheffield’s hospitals every year.
He said the priority of Sheffield’s hospitals has always been to offer “safe, high quality care”.
