Newry Road Safety Measures Could Save Lives

New road safety measures in Newry could save the lives of motorists and pedestrians.

The Newry Times reported that these new crossings will be located on the Windsor Avenue / Belfast Road junction and the Church Avenue / Downshire Road junction.

Speaking to the publication, Sinn Féin Newry Councillor Charlie Casey explained the two new crossing points should make the roads in the city safer.

He said he is “delighted” to hear the road safety improvements will be carried out, noting both crossings are on the main arterial routes to the town centre, with these roads seeing high traffic volumes every day.

Mr Casey added that he hopes the crossings encourage motorists to reduce their speed and provide pedestrians with safe crossing points on the busy road.

All measures that improve road safety should be welcomed, especially in light of the high number of road traffic accidents Northern Ireland saw at the beginning of 2014, he noted.
