Lorry Crushes Worker In Hull Vehicle Recovery Firm Accident
20th January 2014
A Hull-based vehicle recovery company was fined in a hearing at Hull Magistrates’ Court on January 17th after a worker was trapped under a lorry in an accident at work.
The 22-year-old employee was working at ABR Rescue Ltd’s premises on Grindell Street, Hull, on June 1st 2012.
He had been installing a brake chamber to the seven-tonne vehicle, which had its rear wheels removed and was being supported by one solitary hydraulic jack that was standing on a piece of wood.
It fell from this jack when another employee started the engine, and the injured worker, who was underneath the lorry at the time, was seriously injured as a result of this workplace accident, fracturing two spinal vertebrae and being left unable to work for as long as three months.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive indicated the company had neglected its workplace safety obligations, had not dealt with the risks inherent in work underneath heavy vehicles and had not set up safe working systems.
The lorry that injured the worker should have been supported with axle stands, and its wheels ought to have been chocked.
ABR Rescue Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc Act and was fined £5,000 with £3,760 costs.
