Hospital Fall Contributes To Marton Woman's Death

A fall in a hospital led to the death of an 88-year-old Marton woman, an inquest has heard.

The Blackpool Gazette reports that Dorothy Clegg fractured her hip in the fall at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on August 27th. A fall sensor had been removed from her clothing before the incident happened, and although Coroner Alan Wilson did not suggest that hospital staff had committed any wrong-doing, Ms Clegg had been judged to be at a high risk of becoming injured in a fall.

Mr Wilson asked hospital staff to inform him what the hospital is doing to protect other high-risk patients, as a formal review is currently being undertaken.

Ms Clegg died of septicaemia and bronchial pneumonia after being admitted to hospital with a urinary tract infection.

In 2010 to 2011, 35 falls in Blackpool Hospital Trust led to serious harm, and in 2012 to 2013, this fell to 35. Although patient falls represent one of the most frequent causes of patient injury in hospitals, the majority of slips, trips and falls lead to no harm or no harm to patients.
