Government Schemes Could Prevent Clinical Negligence Towards Vulnerable People

news thumbnailSeveral government proposals recently unveiled by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt could lead to improvements in elderly healthcare standards.

The proposals include establishing safe, consistent out-of-hours services, joining up services to allow coordinated provision of healthcare, improving the role played by GPs in managing local community’s health, and rolling the friends and family test out to GPs to provide patients with more choice and control.

Mr Hunt explained that elderly and vulnerable people are too regularly failed by the NHS, and these demographics will therefore be the focal point of any amendments to the UK’s healthcare. However, he pointed out that these proposals are the first moves in a “much broader transformation” of hospital care.

Over the summer, the Department of Health will be seeking the views of carers, patients, NHS workers and public health or social care workers on the proposals. It will announce its final plan in October and this will be reflected in 2014 and 2015’s Mandate to NHS England.
